1.) Always bear in mind that the firearms we use are real and are always potentially dangerous. The discharge of only powder at close range can produce severe burns, lacerations or burst eardrums. 2.) Always assume that any firearm is loaded, and handle it as such. 3.) Do not fix bayonets unless ordered to do so. 4.) Never engage in hand-to-hand combat during a battle scenario. 5.) Never attempt to capture an opposing unit’s colors. 6.) Never discharge a firearm in camp or field, without the authorization of an NCO, Officer or the designated Safety Officer. 7.) Firearms will be discharged only under command in company formation or other proper formation. 8.) No one will carry on their person or accouterments any form of firearm projectile in the field. 9.) Never discharge a firearm directly at an opposing re-enactor at distances less than 10 paces (25-30 ft.). Do not contest the issue – if in doubt, discharge the piece vertically into the air, or do not fire at all. 10.) When at “Rest,” do not place your hands, arms, or face over the muzzle of your firearm at any time. 11.) If it is necessary to recover from the “Aim” position, lower the hammer from the full-cock by placing the “crook” of the thumb over the spur and gently lowering the hammer. Be especially observant of the position of the muzzle, and then return to the half-cock. 12.) When firing in ranks, be conscious of your muzzle that it is not endangering your file mate or other comrades. 13.) When firing from the rear rank, make certain that your musket is positioned so that the middle and rear barrel bands are equally spaced over your front file mate’s right shoulder. This is to ensure that your muzzle and hammer are not to close to your file-mate’s ear when you discharge your piece. 14.) Do not smoke when making paper cartridges or when there is loose powder present. 15.) Stapled cartridges are not allowed. 16.) If you observe something you feel is potentially unsafe, bring it to the attention of a Safety Officer, NCO or an Officer. 17.) No one will be allowed in company formation under arms if under the influence of alcohol or drugs. 18.) Individuals in intentional violation of these rules may be subject to being removed from the field. 19.) Firearms must have a working half-cock position, for this is the firearm’s safety mechanism. 20.) Ear protection is highly recommended. The use of cotton will serve this purpose, and will be authentic at the same time. 21.) Powder will be the only thing fired during events, unless directed to wad and ram during special occasions.
